PHNOM PENH, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — Cambodian security forces on Sunday managed to foil all attempts by extremist opposition forces to instigate riots against the government, National Police’s deputy chief and spokesperson Lt. Gen. Chhay Kim Khoeun said.
“Our security personnel have taken tough action against the riot attempts caused by the extremist opposition group on Aug. 18, 2024 and arrested 31 active members of the riot group, including two women,” he said in a report released to the media.
Kim Khoeun said the authorities also seized some dangerous devices such as gasoline bottles, knives, knuckle-dusters, clubs, and slingshots with many steel balls in them.
He added that the alleged rioters are currently in police custody and will be sent to court for prosecution.
Phnom Penh Municipal Police Chief Lt. Gen. Chuon Narin said on Saturday that more than 1,000 security personnel had been deployed in the capital after overseas opponents had called on local people to rally in the capital on Sunday against the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA), with their hidden plot to overthrow the legitimate government.
The CLV-DTA cooperation aims to foster growth, development and stability in the border areas of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. ■
